The tea (Camellia sinensis) has been known for a long time for its effects both exciting and relaxing, in recent times it was found that while the teine (or caffeine ) is known to activate the nervous system, other substances promote relaxation and among them stands out in particulare L-Theanine (or simply theanine) for its marked activity. This is a non-proteic aminoacid an etilamidic derivative of glutamic acid and a GABA (gamma-amino butyric acid) precursor which is an important inhibitor of the central nervous system. In a specific study on young women with anxiety disorders, 200 mg per day of theanine showed in electroecephalogram a high number of alpha waves after about 40 minutes compared to placebo (and to a dose of only 50 mg). Alpha waves are brain waves that characterize the states of relaxation, and this effect of theanine is dued to the inhibition of neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine, serotonin and dopamine.
Other studies with the same dosage have also shown that this aminoacid can reduce symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (insomnia, cramps, depression and irritability).Other studies also have found an activity of L-Theanine in support of some anticancer drugs, as well as activation of the immune system activity against tumors, fungi, bacteria and parasites.
Jujube (Zizyphus jujuba var. Spinosa)
Jujube (or Jujuba) or Zizyphus jujuba is a plant used in Chinese medicine as a sedative (Suan Zao Ren), this species has grown for centuries spontaneous or cultivated in the Mediterranean area . The seeds inside the fruits contain flavonoids and saponins that have soothing and relaxing properties, among them jujuboside (in which is standardized the jujuboside seed extract of this supplement) has shown in some studies activity on brain waves and a relaxing effect when agitation is induced with other substances.
Magnolia (Magnolia officinalis)
Also this plant has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries and recent studies have highlighted in particular the beneficial properties of two substances found in the bark: honokiol and magnolol. The magnolia bark has sedative effect, but doesn’t diminish senses and attention and doesn’t cause fatigue and sleepiness, promoting relaxation and concentration and also counteracting depressive states without addiction (which could be the case of synthetic sedatives and anxiolytics). The honokiol however, has many beneficial properties since it is also a powerful antioxidant activity able to counteract lipid peroxidation and to protect mitochondria from free radicals as shown by numerous studies on laboratory animals. From these activities derive both its brain protective and anti-cancer activity that in recent years has been investigated by scientists in particular with regards to the fight against leukemia and cancer cell proliferation. Moreover, honokiol has the unique ability to inhibit the mTOR pathway, that of the rapamycin receptor, which is essential for tumor growth, without acting in the same direction against the creation of new T cells that also fight tumors. The magnolia bark extract also finally shows anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antibacterial and antifungal activities.
Hawthorn (Crataegus Oxycanta)
Hawthorn is known in herbal medicine for its powerful activity on the cardiovascular system due to its relaxing action on the smooth muscles of the vessels walls, producing calming effects and the regulation of blood pressure, due to presence in its extract of flavonoids, iperoside, vitexin and other active substances .
Double-blind studies have shown vasodilator and cardiotonic action, the use of hawthorn extract is recommended in cases of angina pectoris, arrhythmias and hypertension. It also acts as an anxiolytic and antispasmodic against insomnia, nervousness, irritability, emotional stress and panic attacks and it seems effective in contrasting menopause symptoms. Finally the polyphenolic part of the extract rich in caffeic and chlorogenic acid has a beneficial antioxidant action that protects cells and DNA.
Passion Flower (Passiflora incarnata)
This plant native to Central and South America has long been cultivated in warm temperate climates around the world and used as a remedy for anxiety for its sedative effects on central nervous system. The studies carried out on Passiflora extracts showed a significant anxiolytic action due to the activity of the flavonoids that characterize this plant, and in particular of isovitexin. A comparison of these extracts with benzodiazepines showed a different effects: the passion flower extracts don’t lead to states of drowsiness and could be useful in maintaining attention and concentration during the day, but give nevertheless a good night's sleep during night's rest, while the drugs in question may give a very superficial sleep, fatigue and lack of concentration during the day, in addition to addiction and other adverse reactions that are avoided with the administration of Passiflora extracts even in the long run.
Mistletoe (Viscum album)
Mistletoe is an evergreen plant that grows on various other species of trees and in herbal medicine is considered for its activity against cancer, against the thymus gland involution, and for enhancing immune system and regulating blood pressure, having hypotensive, sedative and vasodilator effects. Mistletoe contains alcaloids, lectins, lignans and phenylpropanoid compounds. The sedative and cardiotonic activity is related to lignans, abounding in the extracts, while stimulation of the immune response is linked to the presence of polysaccharides.
